Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City to Hire Recovering Addicts

The Atlantic and Cape May Country Drug Court has been renamed as Recovery Court and has partnered with Atlantic City’s casino labor union to provide participants with training for the city’s gaming industry, local news outlet Breaking AC reports.

The Drug Court program in Atlantic and Cape May Counties, as well as in other parts of the state, is a program for residents who had previously been arrested on drug charges. It helps its participants to recover from their addiction and reduce the stigma associated with drug abuse.

It was also announced that Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City will be the first casino resort to hire people participating in the Recovery Court program. The former Trump Taj Mahal casino resort is set to reopen its doors under the Hard Rock brand on June 28. The property’s new owner, Hard Rock International, is currently looking for staff for its latest operation.

Commenting on their decision to hire Recovery Court participants, Joseph Jingoli, one of Hard Rock’s local partners in its Boardwalk casino venture, told media that if a person is sober and lives a sober life, there is no reason why they should not be hired in Atlantic City’s casino industry.

”Tremendous Support”

The Drug Court program’s name change and its partnership with the casino industry were supported by Assignment Judge Julio Mendez, the UNITE HERE Local 54 labor union, and executives for a number of casino companies operating in New Jersey.

UNITE HERE Local 54 President Bob McDevitt said that while Hard Rock was the first casino company to join the initiative, other operators have confirmed their interest in participating.

There were 60 Recovery Court participants to attend Local 54’s first meeting as part of the initiative. Mr. McDevitt said that about 75% of them had worked in the Atlantic City casino industry before winding up in the criminal court system.

Mr. Jingoli said that they have already begun interviewing people and that those admitted to a second interview would not be held back or rejected due to their past.

Hard Rock will hire around 3,500 people for its new resort. Successful job applicants from the Recovery Court program will be referred to Local 54 to be trained for jobs in the culinary and environmental/cleaning services.

Located at the site of the former Trump Taj Mahal, Hard Rock Atlantic City is set to open doors on June 28. It will feature a hotel, a casino with over 2,100 slot machines and 120 table games, food and beverage facilities, entertainment venues for live performances of various nature, and entertainment facilities, among others. The property will be the first of two to reopen this summer, with Ocean Resort Casino, formerly Revel, being the other one. An opening date for the latter is yet to be announced.
